Images of a dog chained to the back of a car and dragged along the road have sparked outrage on Chinese social media.
Following images posted on the social media platform Weibo, as well as a video clip lasting over a minute of the incident, thousands of people decided to track down the driver’s identity. The man’s personal information, such as his name, address, and phone number, was shared online in China so that people could follow the perpetrator in real life.
Personal information was obtained through the license plate number, which is in the hands of the authorities, but it is unclear how it leaked. On September 22, the driver, identified only as Mr. Trinh, confessed his guilt on local television. He explained that his dog kept biting people without reason. He also pleaded with netizens to stop sharing his personal information.
The incident took place on the streets of Shantou City in Guangdong Province last weekend. A golden retriever was tied by the neck to the back of a vehicle and dragged along the road. Initially, the dog ran after the vehicle, but when it could no longer keep up, it gave up, despite suffering serious injuries and bleeding from its hind legs.
Despite warnings from several people, the young man ignored them all, and the dog was eventually dragged to its death. However, the dog’s owner claimed it didn’t die but was simply left on the road. Members of an animal protection group arrived at the scene but “found nothing.”
“This is unbelievable. What did the dog do wrong for its owner to punish it like that?” – one netizen commented. “I don’t understand what the people filming and taking pictures were thinking. If everyone had gotten out of their cars to stop him, the dog wouldn’t have been abused like that?” – another said.
