More than 1,000 dog carcasses were discovered on the grounds of a house in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. Police are investigating a man in his 60s for violating animal protection laws, according to The Korea Herald.
This man claimed that he took in abandoned dogs and starved them to death. However, animal rights activists allege that he received money from the owners of dogs that were no longer able to conceive or had little commercial value.
Representatives from the animal rights group Care told MBN television that the man was paid 10,000 won (US$7.60) for each animal to “care for” them. However, he only kept them confined and starved them to death starting in 2020.
According to South Korea’s Animal Protection Act, those who intentionally kill animals by withholding food or water can face up to three years in prison or a fine of 30 million won.
The incident came to light when a resident in the neighborhood searched for their lost dog. Upon discovering the house filled with dog carcasses on March 4th, the person immediately reported it to the police.
KBS and other television stations broadcast blurred footage of dead dogs lying scattered in cages, sacks, and rubber containers on the ground in the yard.
The corpses were decomposed and piled on top of each other, according to Care staff present at the scene.
Only four dogs survived and were rescued from the house; they are now receiving treatment at a clinic. All are suffering from malnutrition or skin diseases, with two in critical condition.
Yangpyeong County plans to clean up the scene this week.
