When its owner suffered a broken neck in the freezing snow, the dog stayed beside him all night, keeping him warm to save his life
A dog named Kelsey is being praised as a “hero” after staying beside her owner, keeping him warm and helping call for help when he suffered a broken neck after falling in the snow.
According to The Telegraph, Bob, a resident of Michigan, USA, went outside alone on New Year’s Eve to gather firewood. Since he did not plan to go far, he was only wearing a T-shirt and slippers, even though it was 10:30 PM and the temperature was around -4°C.
Unfortunately, Bob slipped, fell, and broke his neck. He screamed for help, but his neighbors lived too far away to hear him. Thankfully, Kelsey heard his cries and rushed to his side. She kept him warm by lying on top of him and helped keep him conscious by licking his hands and face.
“She barked to alert people but never left me,” Bob recalled. “She kept me warm and awake. She helped me keep fighting to stay alive.”
After struggling for 19 hours in the freezing cold, Bob eventually lost consciousness. Kelsey continued barking and even howling until someone finally heard her and came to take Bob to the hospital.
“I was amazed to realize I had no frostbite injuries at all. I truly believe that was because Kelsey was determined to keep me warm and safe,” Bob said.
Dr. Chaim Colen, the surgeon who operated on Bob, said he was astonished by his recovery. “After surgery, miraculously, he began moving his limbs again,” the doctor explained.
Bob said he would “always be grateful” to both the doctors and, of course, Kelsey. “I’m so thankful for my two heroes. Kelsey kept me warm and barked loudly for help. Dr. Colen saved my life and helped me move again. They are heroes,” he said.
